What is Crime Stoppers?

Crime Stoppers is a partnership between the community volunteer organisation Crime Stoppers Queensland Limited and the Queensland Police Service. Crime Stoppers is a community organisation that believes the general public can help make a difference in preventing and solving crime. Crime Stoppers was established in Queensland in 1989 and operates throughout Australia.

Crime Stoppers Queensland Limited is celebrating 20 years of charity work in Queensland during 2010.

Contact with Crime Stoppers can be made in one of two ways. The first is through the FREE telephone hotline 1800 333 000 through which members of the Queensland community can provide anonymous information about criminal activity. The information received is passed onto the Queensland Police Service for investigation.

Callers may remain anonymous – removing the fear of retaliation or becoming involved in court proceedings. Calls are not recorded nor taped in any way. Callers are not identified electronically. The telephone caller ID number is not able to be viewed by Crime Stoppers.

The second way to provide anonymous information to Crime Stoppers is through the Share Crime Information Now section of our website at Crime Stoppers. The website offers the same protection to your identity as the telephone hotline with the IP address of the computer being removed by the secure servers.

When should you contact Crime Stoppers?

• If you have information relating to a crime which has been committed

• If you suspect that a crime is being planned

• To report an address where drug production and/or distribution may be taking place

If you wish to report a crime in progress or you require emergency assistance, you should dial the Australian Emergency Number 000 (triple zero).

How does the call centre work?

Trained operators receive your call and take note of the details provided. Information is forwarded to the most relevant section of the Queensland Police Service for attention and investigation. All details are important, however, caller identity is not required. Your anonymity is the key feature of the system.

Can your contact with Crime Stoppers be traced?

No. Our telephone equipment and website is designed specifically not to reveal the caller telephone number or internet IP address. Your anonymity is assured.

Can you find out if your information has proven helpful?

Yes. If you provide information via the telephone hotline or website, you are given a code number during the initial call or at the end of submitting your online information. Callers can make a second call to 1800 333 000 up to 12 months later, quoting the original code number, in order to be advised of the result of the information provided. Website users may re-enter their code number on the home page of the website to view the result of their information.

Will you receive a reward for your information?

Yes. If the information you provide leads to the arrest of the offender/s, then you may be eligible to receive a reward of up to $1000, depending on the seriousness of the crime solved. This is paid on an anonymous basis if you maintain contact with Crime Stoppers, providing the original code number only.

What are the benefits of providing information anonymously?

Information providers gain personal satisfaction in helping to protect their community by contributing to law and order and public safety. A community which is active in protecting itself may also deter would-be offenders.

Is Crime Stoppers successful?

Yes. Since 1989, in Queensland there have been more than 512,000 calls, leading to over 18,000 arrests and more than 48,000 charges. Drugs worth over $569 million have been seized and more than $9.2 million worth of stolen property recovered. 19 murders have also been solved through Crime Stoppers.
